Cousins night out

For the past several years, my brother and I and our two cousins Lisa and Dave try to get together for a cousin’s night out. The four of us grew up as close as siblings so I miss them a lot now that I live over an hour away and don’t see them that often outside holidays.

We usually do dinner and then a show at Second City, the legendary improv and sketch comedy club that, I’m pretty sure, has produced more Saturday Night Live stars than any other comedy club in the U.S. Anyway, over the holidays we started planning an outing and this past Saturday night was the chosen date.

Unfortunately, Lisa and her husband had to cancel at the last minute because her husband woke up sick. But the remaining four of us — me, Brian, Dave and my brother Ron — met up and had a great time.

We decided on dinner at Margaritaville on Navy Pier. I’ve been wanting to go there since it opened last summer. It was good, but I’m thinking the vibe is a lot better in the summer, sitting outside. It’s a place meant for al fresco dining in the hot sun with cool breezes. Not the same vibe when you arrive all bundled up in layers of sweaters, down feather coats, gloves and scarves that you have to peel off before sitting down. But the drinks were good and the food delicious and it was still a fun time.

As for the show, it turned out we waited too late to get Second City tickets when I tried to book them two weeks ago. The 8p.m. show was sold out and the other option was an 11p.m. show (we’re too old to stay out that late šŸ™‚ ) or an 8p.m. show at the Up Comedy club, which I had never heard of. Turns out, it is a club opened by Second City on the 3rd floor of the same building. I wondered why I had not heard of Up until now but it turns out, it is brand-spanking’ new. They haven’t even had their grand opening yet.

They do sketch comedy as well as stand-up acts at Up. Brian Posehn was performing on this particular Saturday. If you’re like us, you may not know who that is by his name but as soon as you see his picture, you’ll be all, “Ohh, THAT guy!” This guy:

Brian Posehn

We decided to go with the 8p.m. Brian Posehn show (we loved him on Sarah Silverman) and were pleased with our choice. Apparently a big part of his act and persona for most of his career was his daily pot smoking habit, which he finally gave up at his doctor’s urging a year or so ago. The good news for other comedians is that you don’t have to be messed up to be funny. He was quite funny without the help of illegal substances. Although his sobriety from weed also was the plot of many of his funnier jokes.

Opening for him was Dan Telfer, a very funny, nerdy comic who also writes for The Onion, the most brilliantly written publication in the history of ever.

The four of us shared lots of laughs at both the show and with each other, despite missing Lisa. And no one got arrested! We’re working on plans for a cousin camping trip this summer. Already looking forward to it.

Hope everyone had a great weekend!
